early morning rise, before the sun does, with
winds a’howlin’ and stars twinklin’, climbing
on the drive to the trailhead, where at the lot
when i arrive, the cold rips through my garment
layers, to the bone, and i reach for a warm vest
going up the famed “downhill,” i warm up quickly
knowing that when i get into the oaks, they will
shield me from the 50+ mph gusts, but what i
was not considering was how much the grand oaks
and the running water would change my mindset
windy? cold? not ideal conditions? should i be out here/there?
over five hours of wandering, sessioning sections of trail,
studying lines and giving them a go, more than once,
cleaning tech i had not done so in a while, slowing down
to listen to and feel the wonder of being in a place
