Adjacent/behind Cal Poly Humboldt, what was Humboldt State, sits Arcata Community Forest. It’s redwoods nirvana and you can mountain bike it. Basically, it’s not so big that you’d get lost. Park your car at one of the trailheads and go, or ride from town. Note: some trails are hiking only and some of the mountain biking trails are one-way directional. Use your favorite app to map things out and/or here’s a nice one from the city: https://www.cityofarcata.org/DocumentCenter/View/8903/Arcata-Community-Forest-Trail-Map-PDF
Peanut Butter was fun and not too crazy with its features/jumps. Jump/Lorax/Once-ler Trail, well, was too big for me. Ha! There are go-arounds on both lines. I ran PB and then circled back up/around to go down Jump/etc. Mostly, I like both wheels on the ground at this age, ahem, stage in life, but I managed to get a little airborne.
Again, you can go around the big stuff …

No injuries. An hour or so of riding before getting back on the road, was a great way to start the day. Didn’t see another rider while there. A local 8-hour mountain bike race (The 8 Hours of Humboldt) was about to happen the weekend after I passed through town, organized partly by the crew at Adventure’s Edge, which opened its doors in 1970: https://www.adventuresedge.com/
Almost forgot, the berms…the berms! My goodness they were fun!
