I wanna hang out in the desert and ride a bike but a “skinny” tire bike isn’t all that great when riding sand that can get deep. I wanna bike all winter long and not care about snow in the mountains. I wanna bike sometimes with burritos hanging off my bike, carrying stuff for sleeping and eating.
I wanna, wanna, wanna …
Rollin’ fatties on sand and rock and scrabble across a landscape of plants that scrape and scratch and prick is adventure biking. If you simply wander here and wander there, using sight lines and the sun’s position to define your route, you won’t actually get lost. You can’t really mess it up. Sure, things could go awry, but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong.
It’s kind of like having your cake and eating it too. You get to: extend biking season into the shoulder season and beyond, meaning into winter; you get to enjoy a biome that is a great mix-up from riding in other ones for most of the year; you get to ride where it’s very likely to be mostly sunny and warm; and if you’re lucky, you might come to love a new pace of riding.
It’s out there, if you want it. It can be yours. You really can have it all. Fat biking in the desert is where it’s at. Get your dessert biking fix, if you wanna.
