In between grading papers and exams, I squeezed in time to watch the full film release of Camera Corner: Wende Cragg Documents the Birth of Mountain Biking. If you’re a mountain biker, this is a film not to be missed. While I knew a good bit of the history, the viewpoints provided by Wende and others (Fisher, Breeze) of the early days are a hoot. Also, let’s not forget and be sure to say that Wende is a right there at the top of mountain biking greats, with regard to the founding of our sport.
A few thoughts: the insights into early mountain biking journalism are wonderful to see; I love that in the early days, mountain biking was about getting away from town, the views from the top, stopping to smell the rose hips; simply having fun seemed to be the primary motivator for going mountain biking; and who knew of the connections between mountain biking and Neil Young and The Grateful Dead and Star Wars!
Give yourself an hour of time to watch it and when you’re done, I bet you’ll be inspired to ride this weekend! Hope the weather’s good for it, wherever you are!
