Hurricane Hilary is outside the window, light rain falling all morning. Down Baja way, the flooding has begun and it’s looking catastrophic in some locales. The brunt of the rain will hit the San Diego region in a couple of hours and then drop inches of rain, likely turning streams in the mountains and deserts into fast-moving/raging waterways and rivers not seen in recent times.
My plan for the day is to keep reading/prepping for my new US Water policy course. Reading — the thought then got me thinking: MTBeer readers might be looking for something to read today (?).
Before getting there, I’m going to insert a clip of Vallenato music from a friend’s family band that performed at Deft Brewing in San Diego. Deft is off the beaten path and if you’re looking for live music in a setting that feels a little like Telefonica in Tijuana, check it out. There’s also a meadery, wine bar, coffee roaster and a food tent with sandwiches and pizza.
Hurricanes that hit the USA pretty much come up via Latin American way. Music from there is some of my favorite, no matter the genre. If you’re in San Diego on the second Friday of the month, check out live Latin jazz at The Riviera on El Cajon Blvd. You won’t be disappointed.
To the readings …
Here’s a piece on how craft beer stimulates the Midwestern USA economy:

We’re talking $20 Billion. Having lived in Indiana for 6 years, I got to know some of that scene. Favorite breweries there (Midwest) include: 3 Floyds, Surly (not the bike company), Bell’s, Upland, People’s/Lafayette, Sun King to name a few. Favorite trail(s) include: Brown County, IN, all things Keweenaw, CAMBA, WI trails, Kickapoo, and that little sliver along the creek on the northside of Lafayette that was a “lifesaver” so many times.
Looking for a new bike? I’m going to guess that bikes are going to be on sale soon. The boom of the pandemic that bike shops felt might have ended and there’s going to be lots of inventory.
Seb, founder/editor of Cranked and who was featured here on MTBeer, is closing down the shop. I’ve had the fortune of having my work published quite a few times in Cranked, Seb being a delight to work with over the years. It’s a huge unfortunate reality for mountain biking journalism, but I am happy for Seb and whatever may come next for him. Thanks, Seb, and all the best, to you.
Mountain biking journalism is slowly dying, it seems. Here’s to hoping that the likes of Mountain Flyer and Freehub can keep things going on this side of the pond.
Latest beer that I thought was outstanding:
Wishing you a positive week ahead. Cheers, everyone. Stay/be safe and look after your neighbor(s), be they next door or across the border(s).
