Bicyclist Magazine had the byline “Since 1994, Independent and Always Free.” It was a southern California ‘zine that featured road and mountain biking. It’s looking like, from what I can gather, that it is yet another victim of covid. Dammit.
The small, local/regional publications are what help keep communities together, be it newspapers or a little biking magazine. From sharing news to promoting events, as well as celebrating culture, when the local written perspective is lost, it’s hard to find it again and get it back into print.
At the link is the column series that I wrote for Bicyclist for a little while, titled In Search of Dirt. You can read about riding, grubbing, grabbing a beer in places like Pisgah National Forest, St. George, Kernville, Gooseberry, Prescott and places around San Diego.

Recently, I “found” my new local ride from the front door, mixing a little road with a little trail network, where I did go a-searching for dirt. Best part: up high I can see the ocean, Point Loma, downtown, the Coronado bridge, and the same-name islands down in Mexico’s waters. The point? I need to go in search of dirt more often. Treasures abound in places we otherwise pass through/by/around.
Happy Monday, MTBeer crew!
Hey James. Is it publications in general, or is the decline related to cycling?
