On a mountain bike, out there flying around the landscape, the movement provides a sense of freedom for many of us. Early on, there was more of a rebellious-like spirit to it. Who would ride a bike on a trail in the mountains with all those rocks and lung-busting ascents? The fear of not having the brake power to slow down on the descents? Plus, we rode on trails that weren’t open to us.
Fast forward.
These days, I’m more into the understanding that I’m out there riding to get away and unplug, tapping into the sense of mind/body/soul health.
Huh? What?
I ride to stay sane and keep fit, the whole idea being that it’s like a prescription to keep me healthy. Pedal bike on trails = good overall health.
Lasagna. I like it and eat it every now and then. When I do, I plan long rides after the meal and leftovers. Eat/enjoy/ride (off the calories).
Socks. Why am I showing this picture? For the first time in 30 years of mountain biking, I forgot to bring a pair of socks. I realized it when I was 10 minutes from the trail head. I laughed! That probably wouldn’t have been my reaction 30 years ago. A few minutes later, I thought: The gas station/general store in Pine Valley probably has socks. They did. All good.
Anyway, the whole point here is: there is no point. People do what people do and sometimes what we do makes us feel good (ballet, stamp collect, throw axes … as long as it causes no harm to humans, cool). Sometimes those feel good “things” lead us to take life a little less seriously (hopefully).
Big plates of lasagna and finding new socks = mountain biking is something to do and so far, it still makes me happy.
Good stuff Jim!
Maybe you should do a "Favorite recipe's" post one of these days. We just made a slow cooker beef roast with pepperchini's (sp?) & ranch. So tasty, and leftovers for a couple days. If it gets boring I add some Sriracha and it's good again.
Matching socks are overrated.
Great narrative and style, Jim. Love your photos, too. Would love to have seen local store architecture and, of course, the new socks (half the reason I tuned in to your title). 😉
