On State St. in downtown Santa Barbara, M Special Brew Co is a most-welcoming independent brewery. If you’re thinking that they’re the brewery headquartered in Goleta, you are correct. In SB, you can enjoy those beers, as well as food, in a space that is respectful of the human experience.
The beer? While in town, I had a saison and a smattering of half pours that were on tap for the anniversary celebration. No joke, is what I thought. M Special takes beer seriously and attention to flavor details is top notch. I did not have a “bad” beer.
They have food in-house and they have beers to go. If you’re into light drinkers with citrus/fruit added in, you will love Elder Flat (lemons) and Sabado Tarde (tangerines). I am not a big fan of those styles of beers, but I have to say, I enjoyed both, though a can/half-pour is plenty for me. They’d be pretty much perfect for a post-ride quaff at the trailhead.
I had other dinner plans, but word on the street is that the food is quite tasty.
M Special is on the same block as Night Lizard. Put ‘em both on your list for your MTB post-ride sating. And if you’re into the music of Jack Johnson, well, M Special is his one of his local hangouts when in town, where you might see him sitting at the bar and having a beer like everyone else.
